Engine Cylinder Bore Surface May Develop Cracks

Cracks may cause engine damage and a stall or an oil leak, increasing the risk of a crash or fire.

Summary

Lamborghini (Automobili Lamborghini) is recalling certain 2021 Urus vehicles. Cracks may develop on the surface of the engine cylinder bore.

 

Remedy

Dealers will replace the engine, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 25, 2021. Owners may contact Lamborghini at 1-866-681-6276. Lamborghini’s number for this recall is L636-R.03.21.

This notice applies to Your Lamborghini Urus with the VIN

 

Dear Lamborghini Owner, Lessee,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2021 Urus vehicles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a vehicle in this recall.

 

What is the issue?

On the affected vehicles, there is a possibility that cracks could occur on the running surface of the cylinder 6′ bore. During engine operation, a crack in the bore can lead to an impaired contour of t he piston’s running surface. If this occurs, there is potential for engine damage, loss of power without warning, and oil leakage from a damaged engine block could occur which could increase the risk of a crash or fire.

For all the reason set forth above, it is therefore necessary to repair these vehicles.
If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers of this important information.

 

What Do You Need to Do?

In the interest of your own safety and that of your passengers, please contact your preferred authorized Lamborghini dealer immediately to schedule an appointment to have this important repair performed, free of charge.

You can still drive your car, however, we encourage you to arrange an appointment with your retailer as soon as possible. If noises from the engine crankshaft is present and/or an oil pressure warning is displayed in the instrument cluster, we recommend safely stopping the vehicle, switching the engine off and contacting your local retailer.

What will Lamborghini do?

We will replace the engine free of any costs. The repair could take up to 26 hours. We apologize for any inconvenience this recall may cause.

Please bring this letter and your Service Booklet with you when you visit the dealer, so that the dealer can make all necessary entries.

If you have previously paid for a repair related to this condition, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Please contact Lamborghini Customer Care at the number below for details on how to claim for reimbursement.

 

What if you are not the current owner of this vehicle?

You can update your vehicle ownership or contact information by filling out the enclosed document (Appendix A) and sending it to Lamborghini by following the instructions.

If you are a vehicle lessor, Federal Regulations require you to forward this notice to your lessee within ten days.

“Engine Replacement”

  • What is the issue with the affected vehicles?

Lamborghini has discovered that on a specific number of vehicles there is a possibility that cracks could occur on the running surface of the cylinder 6’ bore.

 

  • What is the cause of this condition?

A temporary process error at the supplier during the casting process of the specifically affected engine blocks during a specific time period. More specifically, temporarily misalignment of the automated mold-extrusion stamp occurred in the casting plant.

 

  • What effect does the condition have?

During engine operation, a crack in the bore can lead to an impaired contour of the piston`s running surface. If this occurs, there is potential for engine damage, loss of power without warning, and oil leakage from a damaged engine block could occur which could increase a risk of fire.

 

  • How can the condition be identified?

Possible noises from the engine crankshaft may occur while driving and an oil pressure warning may be displayed in the instrument cluster.

 

Is there any risk for the car occupants?

Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is not aware of any accidents or other incidents resulting in injury to a person or damage to property.

 

  • Which vehicles are affected?

Lamborghini Urus, model year 2021.

 

  • How many vehicles are affected worldwide?

7 units.

 

  • Which VIN numbers are affected?

From ZPBUA1ZL6MLA11325 to ZPBEA1ZL6MLA12169; manufactured from October 2020 to December 2020.

 

  • What exactly needs to be updated on the car?

The engines of the affected vehicles must be replaced.

 

  • How long will the repair work take?

Normally, the repair work will take approximately 26 hours.

 

  • Can customers continue to drive the cars?

Customers can still drive their cars, however, we encourage them to arrange an appointment with their retailer as soon as possible.  If noises from the engine crankshaft is present and/or an oil pressure warning is displayed in the instrument cluster, we recommend safely stopping the vehicle, switching the engine off and contacting your local retailer.
